Why we started sod smith

Before starting Sod Smith, Kaleb worked for other Minneapolis landscaping contractors during college. What he saw repeatedly was a lack of follow-through, poor communication, and a pressure to upsell customers on services they didn't need. He knew there was a better way.


Sod Smith was founded in 2018 with a simple mission: be the lawn company Minneapolis homeowners actually want to call. One that shows up when it says it will, gives honest assessments even when the honest answer means a smaller job, and does work it's proud to put its name on.


Seven years and hundreds of lawns later, that mission hasn't changed. Kaleb and Micah still personally oversee every project and the reviews speak for themselves.

Kaleb founded Sod Smith in 2018 after years of working for other Minneapolis-area landscaping contractors and watching the same problems repeat: upselling, poor follow-through, and crews that didn't take pride in their work. He saw how frustrated homeowners got — and knew he could build something better. As owner and CEO, Kaleb leads every customer relationship from the first phone call to the final walkthrough. He's known for giving honest assessments — sometimes telling customers that sod isn't the right fit for their specific yard, and helping them find the solution that will actually work long-term. Since 2018, Kaleb has personally overseen hundreds of sod installations across Minneapolis and the Twin Cities metro, building a 4.9-star reputation that customers describe as "the best contractor we've ever worked with."

Micah joined Sod Smith shortly after launch and quickly became the engine behind every installation. As co-owner and COO, Micah directly oversees field operations, manages Sod Smith's expert crews, and ensures every project meets the quality standard the company was built on. Micah leads Sod Smith's irrigation division, specializing in smart water-efficient systems including Irrigreen installations. He's worked with dozens of Twin Cities homeowners to design irrigation setups that protect new sod investments and dramatically reduce the time and hassle of manual watering. Customers regularly call Micah out by name in reviews for his calm expertise, attention to detail, and willingness to keep working until the project exceeds expectations.
